Photo-based animation loops
Matt Black Grass, Esquina, Adidas , 2010. Photo-based animation loop, color, sound, 01:04
Made with a similar technique as Location one & two and other short animations, these ultra-short video loops are photo-based animations. Movement, time, and spatial relationship are created by the deliberate distortions in the process of blending a photo sequence. The pixels from one image are dragged and melted into those of the next one.
Working with dancer/ choreographer Mattew Heggem, I set rules to undermine gravity, and we always performed “as if” the gravity is flipped. Despite the ease to rationally see the “trick” of flipping of the images, the perception is still strongly affected, which is even more interesting for me: a flickering overriding of knowing by seeing.
